Aronimink Golf Club Receives Township Waiver for Tree Clearing

Despite the snow, work is well underway to bring lush greens to the PGA Championship in May at the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square.

Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square was granted a waiver Jan. 6 by the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors to clear 10 acres of trees to build a temporary broadcast center for the international media that will be covering the 2026 PGA Championship.

Conservationists are concerned, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

They say taking down the trees could create erosion and flooding downstream. Wildlife habitats could also be destroyed.

In opposition to the clearing are the Darby Creek Valley Association and Radnor Conservancy, who have asked for alternatives.

But Aronimink club officials say the media center will be removed when the tournament ends and 638 replacement trees planted, some in the cleared area, others elsewhere on the grounds.

About 8.5 acres of the cleared area will be turned into a meadow in a location that could also be the site of future golf holes.

Club officials said a typical PGA host has 500 acres to offer but Aronimink only has 300 acres and needs to create more space.

“This is a relatively unique opportunity, and the club is very proud to host this championship,” Mark Damico, an attorney representing Aronimink, said at last Monday’s meeting.
