A documentary on Phillies legend Mike Schmidt, “Michael Jack Schmidt,” aired Thursday night on the MLB Network taking viewers inside the emotional and on-field struggles Schmidt had living up to fans’ expectations, writes Gabriella Carroll for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Schmidt lived in Media Borough in a home he bought in November 1979, the year before the Phillies took the World Series. He sold the home in 1992.

Mike Schmidt played his entire career from 1972 to 1989 with the Philadelphia Phillies and is considered one of the greatest players in Phillies history, but he had a hot and cold relationship with his fans and the media.

“Philadelphia is the only city where you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day,” Schmidt once said.

That quote actually opens the documentary, which highlights his baseball career but dives deeper into his relationship with fans.

Producer James Potocki had previously collaborated with Schmidt on a documentary highlighting Royals great George Brett.

He’s joined in the film by friends and fellow sports legends, including former Sixers Doug Collins, Charles Barkley, Julius Erving, Johnny Bench and George Brett.
