South Philadelphia’s Hawthornes Cafe to Close After 15 Years, But Likely Not Forever

The owners of Hawthornes Cafe announced plans to close the restaurant in January. However, left the door open for it to potentially resurface in a new home in the future.

Hawthornes Cafe, the popular South Philadelphia brunch spot, will be closing in January after 15 years in business, writes Henry Savage for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

However, the owners said it isn’t a forever goodbye.

“We will find a new home for Hawthornes when the circumstances are perfect while imminently resurrecting Sonny’s & Wine Dive along with some other dope [stuff],” the owners wrote in a social media post.

Hawthornes Cafe has been a go-to spot for its American brunch dishes since it opened in 2009. Some favorites include the chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits, along with a rotating selection of hundreds of craft beers.

In 2013, a fire shuttered the café for 11 months before returning with the dedicated staff and atmosphere that made it such a South Philly favorite.

Hawthornes has a legacy of being the first of many things.

“We were one of the firsts that brought growlers into the city of Philadelphia. One of the first to actually have a proper beer cafe serving brunch. We actually got the law changed to allow ‘quick sip’ beer and wine delivery,” owner Chris Fetfatzes. “Many things that we did, you now see a lot of other neighborhoods doing.”
