Cheesesteaks are essentially a city ordinance. Whether from Angelo’s, Jim’s, or Pat’s King of Steaks, expect long lines on game day that will also move quickly.

Roast pork sandwiches may not get the tourist crowds that cheesesteaks get, but local know its appeal. Those from John’s Roast Pork are the city’s best version, but DiNic’s inside Reading Terminal Market is another standout.

Hoagies complete the holy trinity of beloved Philly sandwiches. You can find excellent versions at Breezy’s, Cosmi’s, and Farina Di Vita, and more inventive versions at places like Middle Child.

Philly is also home to a number of BYOBs and a strong Italian food scene.

Soft pretzels are also a standout. There are standouts like Miller’s Twist and Philly Pretzel Factory.

For dessert, cannolis are a great choice. Isgro and Termini Brothers have both been Philly staples for over a century.

Water ice is another must-try in Philly, with flavors like lemon, cherry, pineapple, and more. Three solid options are John’s, Pop’s, and Rita’s.
