Villanova University’s Lucas Kopecky was a former standout on the Wildcats’ lacrosse team, but now he’s giving football a try, writes Katie Lewis for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
He played four seasons as a defensive midfielder and faceoff specialist in men’s lacrosse and now returns as a wide receiver on the university’s football team.
Kopecky was in every lacrosse game during his four years, and as a senior in 2024, became a four-time award recipient on the Big East all-academic team. The team ended the season in the Big East final.
When Kopecky arrived at Villanova for the 2019-20 season, he aspired to play Wildcat football, but was recruited instead by lacrosse coach Mike Corrado.
The two sports had conflicting schedules during the pandemic, so Kopecky had to give up on football temporarily.
“I wanted to play so bad. In college, I always kept a ball in my hands even when I wasn’t on the football team and threw whenever I had the chance,” Kopecky said.
Finally, Kopecky got an opportunity to join the football team as a graduate player this season. He’s played six games, averaging 24.2 receiving yards per game and scoring two touchdowns.
