Haverford College graduate Howard Lutnick, a major donor to the college, has been tapped as President-elect Donald Trump's choice for Commerce secretary.

Howard Lutnick, a major donor to Haverford College, has been picked by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Commerce Department, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Lutnick is CEO of the Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald.

His appointment was announced by Trump on Tuesday.

Lutnick, former chair of Haverford College’s board of managers, was co-chair of Trump’s transition.

Trump said Lutnick will “lead our Tariff and Trade agenda with additional direct responsibility for the Office of the United States Trade Representative.”

Lutnick graduated from Haverford College in 1983 with an economics degree. He served on the liberal arts college’s board of managers for 21 years, including as vice chair from 2006 to 2012, and chair from 2012 to 2015.

He is the largest donor to Haverford College, giving the school its biggest gift of $25 million in 2014, with total contributions at that time of $65 million.

The campus’ Allison and Howard Lutnick Library was renovated, largely funded by the $25 million gift.

There is also a Jane Lutnick Fine Arts Building and the Gary Lutnick Tennis and Track Center, named in honor of Howard Lutnick’s brother who died in 9/11 attacks.
