Giant to Close Center City Heirloom Market Store in December After 3 Years

The Giant Heirloom Market store on 8th & Market streets in Center City will close on Dec. 29 after three years.

Giant has announced that it will close its Heirloom Market store in Center City by the end of the year, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.

The closure will come just over 3 years after it opened, citing poor performance and other problems at the location.

“This is simply a business decision, only made after a thorough assessment and efforts to improve performance,” the company said. “Unfortunately, this store has not performed to our expectations and when coupled with the challenges we and others have faced in the neighborhood, it no longer makes sense to continue operating at this location.”

The store on Market Street is one of four Giant Heirloom Markets to open in the city since 2019. The others are in Graduate Hospital, Northern Liberties, and University City, respectively.

The Heirloom Market stores are known to have smaller footprints and a more curated selection of groceries compared to the full-sized Giant supermarkets.

Despite the impending closure of this Giant store on Dec. 28, the chain has continued expanding in throughout the city in recent years. With 10 stores in the city, it plans to open another in South Philadelphia in mid-December.

Giant is also opening a store at the Andorra Shopping Center in Roxborough next year.
