HRP Group Wants to Expand Port of Philadelphia Into the Bellwether District

Chicago-based HRP Group has set aside 300 acres of the 1,300-acre Bellwether District for a potential Port of Philadelphia expansion, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

HRP Group is hoping to set up a formal partnership with PhilaPort regarding the land located west of the Schuylkill River. While high-level talks between the two entities have already taken place, details of any potential expansion are still unknown.

According to Ed Henderson, senior director of business development and planning at PhilaPort, there are several options that could be explored for a partnership, including PhilaPort leasing land or warehouse space from HRP Group or buying the land outright from the company.

PhilaPort has considered expanding its capacity in recent years, each time it focused on five- or ten-acre increments.

“So when [HRP Group] mentions anywhere between 95 and 300 acres, that’s a big deal to us,” he said. “That would substantially improve our footprint. That’s what gets us excited.”

PhilaPort is planning to release its master plan in the next few weeks, which will call for collaboration with neighboring property owners.
