Widener University Offers Beyonce Course This Fall
A freshman course being offered this fall at Widener University in Chester has Beyonce as its theme, writes Jessica MacAulay for CBS News, as reported in The Bharat Express News.
The course is taught by Dr. Richard Cooper, director of the Bachelor of Social Work program and coordinator of African American Studies at the university.
He will explore the continuing cultural and social significance of Beyonce as a source of economic empowerment, feminism and Afrocentricity, a spokesperson for Widener said.
Cooper said students will analyze the singer’s identity and social impact on a deeper level using their knowledge of the Grammy Award winner.
Part of the dynamic growth that comes from a liberal arts education experience is to start with what the incoming freshman already understand, Cooper said.
“By re-examining and juxtaposing the content studied, students are challenged to broaden and more deeply understand the multiple meanings of Beyoncé’s work,” he said.
Students will look at Beyoncé’s music, image, and artistic expression as a reflection of the intersectionality of race, gender, and identity.
Topics covered include Queen Bey’s influence on African American women, her view on body positivity and self-love, plus her advocacy work for social and political change.
