Tommy Joyner of Rose Valley has helped make MilkBoy one of the top music studios in the country. Now MilkBoy is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a Sept. 21 South Street block party, writes Vince Carey for the Daily Times.
MilkBoy Studios is the brainchild of Joyner and Jamie Lokoff. For Joyner, it all started with a cassette recorder, a microphone and a 100-mile journey from Brooklyn.
“I didn’t expect it to last three months, much less 30 years,” said Joyner. “It was just a recording studio in North Philadelphia on top of Zapf’s Music. We were there for seven years.”
Joyner would work in New York for a couple of days, then drive down to Philadelphia to record for a couple of more days, before driving back to New York to work as a handyman.
Since then, some of the biggest acts have recorded at MilkBoy: Zach Bryan recorded his solo album there. Other recent clients are Silk Sonic, Lizzo, Lil’ Uzi Vert and Jazmine Sullivan.
They’ve relocated to a bigger studio in Ardmore, then expanded some more with a coffee house and music venue.
MilkBoy now has venues on Chestnut Street and South Street in Philadelphia.
