The final stop of your Amazon purchase, before it arrives on your Delaware County doorstep, will be a new Amazon warehouse opening this fall in Southwest Philadelphia, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The 140,000-square-foot Amazon distribution center at 6901 Elmwood Ave. will employ hundreds and will be the largest in the Philadelphia region.

The last-mile distribution center will handle 20,000 to 25,000 packages per day to start, the last stop before packages are delivered to Delaware County, Philadelphia, and parts of Montgomery County.

“It’s a very sophisticated operation, so it does take a while to sort of ramp up. You start slow and then add capacity in increments,” said Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly.

The opening of the center was delayed nine months as Amazon coped with significant expansion and a push for greater efficiency and lower customer costs.

It bought the 29-acre site in July 2021 for $9.59 million. Its operations and existing team at a South Philadelphia distribution center will be moved to the new facility.

Amazon has nine locations in Philadelphia:  four delivery stations two Amazon Hub Locker+ locations for receiving packages, one Amazon Prime Now for grocery delivery, and two Whole Foods markets.
