Surgical services end at Taylor Hospital, amid nurses union protest.

The decision to close the operating rooms at Taylor Hospital eliminates 30 positions at the Ridley Park facility, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Crozer Health spokesperson Lori Bookbinder said the surgical services and support staff were offered jobs elsewhere at Crozer.

Crozer decided to close services at Taylor’s three operating room as of Sept. 1. Employees were notified earlier this month.

The health system is consolidating its surgical services at its tertiary care campus, Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, according to Crozer Health CEO Anthony Esposito.

“Taylor Hospital, which has been averaging three-to-four surgical cases per day, will no longer provide surgical services due to a reduction in general surgeons and a need to optimize our resources.”

Taylor Hospital will continue to offer comprehensive non-surgical care and emergency services.

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (PASNAP) spoke out against the elimination of surgical services at Taylor at a Thursday press conference.

“Thanks to Prospect, our patients’ ability to choose where they receive their care in Delaware County is becoming more and more limited,” said. Denise Gibbons, a registered nurse in the emergency department at Taylor Hospital.
