Warren Lewis, Out and About on the Main Line, Leaves Behind Beauty
For 30 years, one intersection at a time, Warren Lewis has been making the Main Line beautiful, writes Ben Silver for Main Line Today.
It started when he moved to Radnor in 1995 and was startled by how dreary the local train station had become in neighborhoods with otherwise beautiful homes and towering trees.
“Right at the top of Radnor Chester Road is the Radnor Train Station and, I said to myself, ‘That looks awful. I can do something to make that look beautiful,” he explained..
Without asking permission, he used his own money to plant arborvitaes, parrotia and blue atlas cedar trees that are still at the station today.
He was never shut down and SEPTA did eventually thank him.
Things are different today.
“It’s completely changed now to do public beautification. It does take that extra step to find out permission, liability, that sort of thing to see if it’s even feasible or not,” he said.
Lewis created Warren Lewis Landscaping which does a lot of commercial public-facing work.
But he’s also done dozens of anonymous beautification projects in Radnor and beyond over decades, bringing joy, light, and beauty to those who need it.
