Everything You Need to Know About Boating and Fishing on the Delaware River
If you are planning on indulging in any water recreation on the Delaware River, including boating and fishing, be sure to first learn about some of its most important attributes, such as its depth and length, writes Damon C. Williams for northjersey.com.
The depth of the Delaware River varies depending on where you enter the water. Its deepest point is 113 feet at the Big Eddy in Narrowsburg, New York.
“River depth may be between 4-6 feet along the shorelines, but drop off steeply to an average of 30-40 feet away from the shore,” according to the Alliance for Watershed Education’s website.
The river is 330 miles long. It runs through four states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
“These headwaters originate in the Catskill Mountains and eventually flow into Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean,” reads the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website.
Overall, the Delaware River is considered safe for water activities. However, the National Park Service warns about currents and steep drop-offs that pose some risks and offers a Delaware River safety guide with safety tips that you should know before entering the river.
