Airport Receives $22M in Funding for Taxiway, Runway Improvements

The Philadelphia International Airport will be making safety improvements to a runway and upgrading a taxiway.

Funding heading to the Philadelphia International Airport will pay for airport infrastructure improvements that include a runway safety enhancement and renovations to a taxiway, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Philadelphia’s Department of Aviation has received $22.2 million for the airport under President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill that was signed into law in 2021.

Department of Aviation CEO Atif Saeed said the work allows PHL to “accommodate increased flight activity safely and efficiently.”

The funds are part of the seventh round of Airport Infrastructure Grants from the Federal Aviation Administration paid for with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The money can be used for runway, taxiway, terminal and roadway projects at U.S. airports.

PHL received $20.4 million earlier this year from the Airport Terminal Program, also funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

That money is paying for terminal energy optimization upgrades to the airport’s HVAC and electrical systems.

In total, Philadelphia International Airport has received $42.6 million in 2024 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

In early 2023, PHL used $15 million from the Airport Terminal Program to renovate its restrooms, and $15 million toward the airport’s terminal energy optimization program.
