John Oliver talked about the Delaware County Health Department's pill disposal program on his show "Last Week Tonight."

The Delaware County Health Department got a mention on John Oliver’s program “Last Week Tonight” Sunday night but officials weren’t exactly thrilled, writes Michael Tanenbaum for Philly Voice.

John Oliver’s Delco mention referred to the health department spending $1 million in opioid settlement funds on a pill disposal program for residents.

Oliver referred to the FDA’s ‘flush list,’ saying many drugs can go down the drain for free..

“(It) seems like a huge waste of money, assuming (Delaware County) has toilets,” Oliver said on his show. “And if they don’t have toilets, then find money to spend on that!”

Oliver’s show was looking at how local and state governments are spending billions in opioid settlement funds received following lawsuits against drug manufacturers and distributors.

The health department is sending pouches to county households so residents can safely dispose of opioid pills and other medications.

The program safely and conveniently disposes of unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, said Delaware County Health Department spokesman Matthew Rankin Tuesday.

“These practices are proven to reduce unwanted medications in the waste streams and decrease the environmental impact on our natural environments,” he said.

Flushing drugs should only be done when there is no other option, Rankin said.
