The new Jamie Wyeth exhibition at the Brandywine Museum of Art provides viewers with a chance to peer into the Chadds Ford artist’s world of horror and beauty, writes Julia Shipley for The Philadelphia Inquirer. 

Jamie Wyeth: Unsettled is inspired by the eeriness the museum’s head curator Amanda Burdan finds in the themes of Wyeth’s work. It features over 60 pieces including oil and watercolor paintings and mixed media montages. 

In his works, Wyeth, who is the son of the renowned painter Andrew Wyeth, tries to bring out the beauty in horror. 

“Well, that’s the opiate,” said Wyeth. “They’re sort of totally married together. I mean, you know, you can’t have one without the other, or at least it doesn’t appeal to me.” 

While the show is not a retrospective, it does feature works from the artist’s teenage years in the 1960s, like Morgue Sketchbook, paintings he created in the mid-1970s, including Lightning Struck from 1975, and those he made in coastal Maine in 2022. 

The exhibit runs through June 9 at the Brandywine Museum of Art.
