St. Joe’s Prep Receives Largest Gift in School’s 173-Year History
St. Joseph’s Preparatory School recently received a $12 million donation from the Howley Foundation, marking the largest gift in the school’s 173-year history, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The donation came from Howley Foundation founder Nick Howley, a St. Joe’s Prep alumnus, and his wife, Lorie. The foundation also recently donated $15 million to Drexel University, of which he is also an alumnus.
Since the start of the year, the Howley Foundation has made gifts totaling $36.1 million to Philadelphia-area schools.
Nick, a 1970 graduate of St. Joe’s Prep is the founder and chairman of Cleveland-based TransDigm Group, an aerospace manufacturing giant with billions in revenue.
His gift to Drexel will help expand a scholarship program at the university that is open to students from seven area schools, including St. Joe’s Prep.
The St. Joe’s Prep donation will expand the Howley Scholars Program to include tuition coverage for 60 students annually across all four classes at the North Philadelphia prep school.
“This is a transformational opportunity for each of those young men and their families,” said St. Joe’s Prep president John Marinacci.
The Howley Foundation will provide $20,000 in tuition for students selected.
