Pro-Palestinian Protest Camps Show Up on Local Campuses, but Calmly
Pro-Palestinian tent encampments have shown up at Swarthmore College and Haverford College, but in contrast to violent clashes at other campuses, the protests have been calm and peaceful this week, writes Alfredo Lubrano, Susan Snyder and Max Marin for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
At other schools across the nation, there have been clashes with police and arrests.
Students are protesting the war in Gaza, and American support for Israel.
The approach to the protests has been different locally.
At Swarthmore College, a tent city has been erected outside the admissions office, with protestors asking the college to reveal any financial ties to Israel, and to cut ties with any business profiting from the Israel-Hamas war, reports 6abc.
They are also asking that student protesters be granted amnesty from suspension or arrest.
In a statement, Swarthmore responded, “We remain open and willing to explore more realistic ways to find common ground and bring this latest demonstration to a peaceful conclusion.”
At Haverford College, students were occupying 15 tents outside Founders Hall Friday morning.
“There has been no action taken against protesters by campus public safety officers,” said Tala Qaraq a junior Palestinian student.
