Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins was a recent guest of Swarthmore College Black Studies professor Nina Johnson for a discussion on “Beyond the Field: Activism, Athletics, and Empowerment in the Modern Political Era,” writes Steve Sherman for the Daily Times.

Jenkins was one of three Eagles who joined Colin Kaepernick in his National Anthem protests in 2016.

Jenkins has since increased his activism, fighting for a fairer criminal justice system and better police/minority relations.

He co-founded the Players Coalition, a collaboration between NFL players and community leaders to improve social equality.

He’s executive produced “Black Boys,” a documentary on Black males living in America.

He supports the Inside-Out Exchange program that brings campus college students and incarcerated students together, encouraging dialogue.

Jenkins says that type of discussion is needed to change a system that has incarcerated 2.3 million inmates, a disproportionate amount of which are people of color.

He hopes to inspire other pro athletes into public activism.

“As professional athletes, we have a voice and we have the power to use that voice to effect change in our society,” he said. “We’re going to use that voice to bring about change that’s been a long time in coming.”
