Frontier Airlines is offering a cheap rate to Pittsburgh competitive with the cost of driving.

In a fluke of modern economics, a cheap Pittsburgh airfare makes it currently cheaper to take a flight out to Pittsburgh then make the 4-hour 46-minute drive there, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

At the moment, there are “dirt cheap” flights from Philadelphia International Airport on Frontier Airlines.

A Pennsylvania Turnpike drive with EZ-Pass will cost you $36.50 one way, not including filling up the tank.

Frontier Airlines just announced it is starting non-stop flights from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (and back) beginning May 16th.

The cost? $34.  Round trip.

Though this cheap Pittsburgh airfare seems too good to be true, a recent online search showed that as of Wednesday and Thursday, Frontier was offering plenty of flights from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh round trip for $34.

And you don’t have to be a member of their discount program to receive those fares.

You will have to pay extra for a carry-on item and there’s a fee if you want to pick where you sit.

How much time do you save? The actual flight is an hour and 15 minutes, with you showing up at the airport an hour early—2-1/4 hours vs. about 5 hours.
