Delaware Records Most Expensive Residential Sale Ever; duPont Estate in Dewey Beach Sells for Millions…to be Razed
The 82-year-old duPont estate in Dewey Beach, Delaware, sold for a record $9.1 million. The trio of purchasers plan to raze the property and rebuild anew, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The transaction represents the most expensive residential sale in Delaware.
The property, known as Sandaway, was originally listed for $11.5 million in March 2019. The sellers eventually reduced the price tag to $10.99 million later that year.
Alexis Felix duPont Sr. built the estate was built in 1939.
He was vice president and director of E.I. duPont de Nemours & Co. The property covers 0.79 acres and is split into the main home and a guest house.
The sale came after the town of Dewey Beach approved the division of the property into three lots.
The approval to trisect the plot helped its sale, resulting in the “highest and best value,” said Kim Hamer, an agent with Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty.
