Villanova's ownership of Cabrini University is having an impact on Cabrini's sports programs and its coaches.

When Villanova University decided to purchase Cabrini University, it changed the vibe on campus and left Cabrini coaches in limbo, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

Some, like coaches Kate Pearson and Steve Coffer, have already found work elsewhere.

Pearson spent 14 years as head women’s basketball coach. She’s now head women’s basketball coach at Rowan University.

Coffer was a men’s lacrosse coach for 23 years with a resume of success. He’s now at Episcopal Academy.

“You work so hard to build something, and you put your life’s passion and energy into it. For it to go away is very difficult,” he said.

When the sale became public, 20 swimmers left Cabrini’s swim team.

“There’s a core group of us picking up the pieces and the odds and ends to make the students feel as if it’s business as usual,” said aquatics director Cindy Ikeler. “I’m impressed with the tenacity of the athletes and students.”

Ryan Van Zelst, hired as head men’s basketball coach, learned two months in it would be his only season at Cabrini.

“I wanted to rebuild the program and get it back to where it should be. But things happen.”
