Wawa Reworks Food Options in Places Where the Hoagie’s Not King
There are places in the United States where the hoagie does not rule supreme. Wawa’s been adapting to that fact as it realigns its menu for its non-Pennsylvania and non-New Jersey stores, writes Angela L. Pagan for Quartz.
This realignment is vital as Wawa continues expanding in places like Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee.
When the first Wawa food market opened in 1969 in Folsom, they had fried chicken and hamburgers, then added deli sandwiches and the iconic hoagie, writes Jessica Gomez for Spoon University.
The food options are nice, but the real love came from the community feeling, Gomez writes, reflecting on the local Wawa she and her sisters frequented.
“The employees there watched me grow up and still show me a little extra kindness and say hello when I visit over school holidays,” she wrote.
Will Wawas in these new locations have that same feel of walking into the store as a local? she asked.
That may be noticed the most in the Midwest, where Wawa faces stiff competition from Casey’s, a beloved convenience store chain especially popular for its gas station pizza.
