Philadelphia Metro Tops the Charts for Highest Cost of Living in Pennsylvania

The average cost of living for a family of four in the Philadelphia metropolitan area is $112,609, which is significantly above the state average of $87,500.

While the average cost of living for a family of four in Pennsylvania comes in at $87,500, if you live in the Philadelphia metro area, you will need to make significantly more than that, writes Ashley Adams for The Keystone.

The Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator measured the income a family needs to have a “modest yet adequate” standard of living. According to its measurements, to achieve that in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, you need to make an annual total of $112,609.

Monthly, a family of four in Philadelphia needs an income of at least $9,384 for all the expenses. This includes $1,470 for housing,  $1,110 for food, $1,945 for child care, $1,420 for transportation, and $1,224 for health care. Another $913 is required for other necessities and $1,303 for taxes.

This puts Philadelphia in the top spot as the metropolitan area with the highest cost of living in Pennsylvania. Second on the list is Pittsburgh, with a monthly total of $8,123 and an annual total of $97,477.
