With the word “P-E-N-D-U-L-O-U-S” safely behind him, Grayson School eighth-grader Hillel Ziskind will represent Delaware County proudly as he heads off to Washington D.C. in May for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Ziskind won the Delaware County Spelling Bee this year with the correct spelling of “pendulous,” writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

“It’s great,” the teen said after winning the competition. “I like it. It’s fun.”

The county competition Saturday at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Morton had 50 first- through eighth-grade students participate. They came from private, parochial, charter, and public elementary and middle schools.

Students compete at their school level. Survivors head to the countywide contest until one winner is named for the national competition.

Sara Christensen, assistant director for teaching and learning at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, described the Bee as a “phenomenal event and we are proud to host.”

This is the first time the Radnor private school had a first-place county winner.

“I could not be more proud of Hillel winning today,” said Kimm Doherty, head of Grayson’s Lower School
