One of Delaware County’s own has made it into space and into the U.S Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Marsha Ivins, a graduate of Nether Providence High School, is being honored by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex as a member of the 2024 U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, along with veteran astronaut David Hilmers.

The induction ceremony will take place June 1 on Merritt Island, Florida.

Ivins has logged more than 7,000 hours in civilian and NASA aircraft. The space flight veteran participated in five space shuttle missions in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, and 2001. She has logged more than 1,318 hours in space.

In 2010, Ivins retired after a 37-year career with NASA.

Thirty-nine years ago, Hilmers and Ivins were both aboard the space shuttle Atlantis preparing for its maiden Oct. 3, 1985 voyage, according to Space.com.

Ivins was configuring the shuttle controls for the crew and was leaving the shuttle as the crew, which included Hilmers, arrived.

“These two veterans of the space program have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in furthering NASA’s mission of exploration and discovery,” said Curt Brown, board chairman of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF).
