Delaware County Council Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. recently praised members of Upper Darby High School’s Lunar Club for their remarkable achievements in lunar geology research.

The nine students and their faculty mentor, Roseann Burns, traveled by trolley to attend the Sept. 21 County Council meeting, where they received a resolution for their achievements. Their research earned them a trip to the NASA AMES Research Center in California over the summer.

“In Delaware County, we are proud that we have students who excel in many areas, from the HighQ and Envirothon competitions to sports and music,” said Civera, an Upper Darby graduate. “This morning, we are happy to recognize a group of students whose achievements are literally out of this world. These members of the Upper Darby Lunar Club are our future scientists, researchers, and astronauts.”

The Upper Darby High School Lunar Club won a national high school research competition that earned them the trip to the NASA Center in California in July. They presented their research alongside college students at the Exploration Science Forum. These sophomores and juniors from Upper Darby attended science sessions with older college and graduate students and young professionals.

The Upper Darby Lunar Club was formed in 2011 to give students the opportunity to conduct authentic research into planetary and lunar geology. The students conducted research to determine the thickness of volcanic rock from lava from an area on the moon.

Members of the club are Christopher DeMott, Galen Farmer, Daniel Gordon, Isabel Hunt, Kenneth Lin, Thomas Nguyen, Zachary Thornton, Vince Tran, and Most Yeasmin.
