The Merion Golf Club in Ardmore is slated to host the U.S. Open every ten years, it seems, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Delaware County Club is already scheduled to host the event in 2030 and again in 2050.  On Monday, the USGA announced that Merion will also host in 2040.

It last hosted the U.S. Open in 2013, which brought in $100 million to the region.  It was also host in 1934, 1950, 1971, and 1981.

In total, it has hosted 19 USGA championships—the most in the country.

John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer, said the relationship between the Merion Golf Club and the USGA continues to grow, so they wanted to put Merion on a more regular schedule for hosting the U.S. Open.

“We are thrilled to be able to return to such an important club on a regular basis and look forward to watching several generations of the world’s best write new chapters in the history of this great game,” he said.

The course was designed by architect Hugh Wilson. It opened in 1896 and is known for its wicker baskets atop the flag stocks.
