On Friday nights, the sounds of laughter and cheering resonate at Jabz Boxing in Ridley.

It’s another Down to Box class, where individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities can work out or get in the ring for some sparring, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The participants are encouraged, guided, and cheered on by more than a half dozen coaches and parents who volunteer at the class.

Individuals can spend their time punching bags in the ring, running and jumping through an obstacle course, running relay races, and sparring with boxing gloves.

“I love punching these 300 pound bags,” said Nick Luther of Ridley Park, a young adult with Down syndrome.. “I want to be a wrestler someday, so I like this motivation for myself and others.”

The classes provide skills in coordination, self-defense and physical fitness by learning boxing techniques.

Diane Perry of Norwood, mother of David Perry, 30, said the class is more than just a workout for David.

“It’s also a social experience, about building friendships. After they’re done boxing every Friday night, the guys take turns going to each other’s homes to hang out, usually watching WWE, since they’re all fans.”
