A Crozer surgical residency program at Crozer Chester Medical Center was set to lose its accreditation, but the program has been granted an extension until more details can be provided to Crozer, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education regulates training programs for new physicians.

It named “special circumstances” as the reason for the accreditation withdrawal but offered no more detail, reports Abraham Gutman for The Philadelphia Inquirer

Crozer Health CEO Anthony Esposito told staff Friday they had reached an agreement with the ACGME to extend the closure deadline for the Crozer surgical residency program.

“As a result, there will be no interruption in our Surgery Residency Program at this time, which will enable us to continue the high-quality care that we provide to our patients and community,” Esposito said.

Crozer, owned by the Los Angeles for-profit company Prospect Medical Holdings Inc., has struggled with financial and patient safety issues.

The loss of accreditation would have stranded 15 physicians in the program, the Inquirer reported.

ACGME accreditation withdrawals happen as a result of “a catastrophic loss of resources, including faculty members, facilities, or funding” or “egregious noncompliance with accreditation requirements,” the Inquirer reported.
