Joe Vaccone, the new owner of the Delco Shack, stands next to the vacant building. He's using the Shack to advertise his real estate company.

The “Delco Shack”, next to the Springfield Mall, has been bought, though the new owner won’t be living there, writes Jesse Bunch for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The one-room 17 x 17-foot redbrick Springfield building, purchased by Realtor Joe Vaccone for $150,000, has no running water and no functioning sewage system.

It does have location and a legendary reputation.

The 52-year-old realtor is ecstatic.

Up to 100,000 travelers per week will see a “For Sale” sign outside the Shack with Vaccone’s name and telephone number that could produce leads for property sales in nearby Swarthmore or Wallingford.

The Shack is a social media magnet, particularly for the 76,000 members of the Facebook group “Meanwhile in Delco”.

The building, built in 1951, spent most of its life housing AT&T’s long distance phone lines before it was outpaced by technology.  It was sold in 2006 and sat unused until Vaccone came along in January.

He flies two flags at site—a US flag and a Delco flag.

“My intention was to proudly fly the American flag as a symbol of patriotism,” Vaccone said, “and to raise the Delco flag to put the location on the map.”

The Shack could still become an office or storage facility, Vaccone added.
