This holiday could see the busiest holiday air travel ever, with Philadelphia expecting 1.1 million travelers over 14 days.

If you don’t like crowds, you might not want to fly out of Philadelphia International Airport anytime after Dec. 21.

The airport expects to see nearly 1.1 million travelers over 14 days of the holiday travel period starting Dec. 21 and lasting until Jan. 3, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Passenger levels are expected to be at heights not seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airport is projecting a 14 percent increase from under 960,000 travelers in the same period for 2022.

The numbers are expected to be only 9 percent less than was reported in 2019.

Nationally, AAA predicts possibly the busiest holiday air travel numbers, with 7.5 million passengers traveling through airports for the holidays. That would actually surpass the record of 7.3 million from 2019.

“We’re now one year past the pandemic, and people are still feeling the cabin fever,”  said Miguel Southwell, president of the air transportation consulting firm Brakkam Aviation Management LLC.  “I believe this holiday season will be the busiest travel season in the history of aviation.”

PHL’s busiest day is expected to be Dec. 26, with 85,000 arriving and departing. That’s followed by Dec. 27 and Dec. 22.
