The Delaware County 911 Center is one of the busiest in the state.

Delaware County’s 911 Center takes a whopping 800,000 emergency calls each year, an average of 2,000 a day, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

That makes Delaware County’s 911 Center in Middletown Township one of the busiest in Pennsylvania.

“We’re one of the leading centers in the commonwealth. We’re very proud of that, answering almost 2,000 calls of service every day,” Delaware County Emergency Services Director Timothy Boyce.

One hundred uniformed team members take those calls helped along this year with a change to 12-hour shifts.

“That’s yielded a dramatic reduction in overtime but, more importantly, the number of times we compel or mandate our members to stay over,” he said.

The time shift has saved money by creating more efficient operators.

The Center is also benefitting from a new $38 million radio system that includes new radios for the county’s 3,700 first responders out in the field.

The 911 Center has been nationally recognized as it brings artificial intelligence on board.

Boyce said AI can pick up certain words from 911 calls like “gun” or “fire” highlighting them so the call immediately goes to a supervisor.
