Delaware County Community College funding is facing challenges from delayed state funding and the possible withdrawal of a sponsoring school district.

Delaware County Community College is facing funding challenges as it waits for overdue state dollars, along with the possible withdrawal of Springfield School District as a sponsoring school district, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Pennsylvania lawmakers have yet to approve funding for the state’s 15 community colleges, initially due July 1, reports the Tribune News Service.

“The delay in funding from the state will cause Delaware County Community College to have to borrow from its reserves to maintain daily operations and provide adequate institutional support,” said Jennifer Schu, director of public relations.

Meanwhile, the Springfield School District School Board has moved to withdraw its sponsorship of DCCC.

In July, it submitted a petition to the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. A decision is pending.

The district is part of a 21-school-district 1966 sponsorship agreement to send money annually to the college in exchange for reduced student tuition.

A Springfield withdrawal would nearly double the costs for community college students who live in the township, said the college’s attorney, Christopher Gerber.

Springfield argues it costs much more to sponsor the college than what it saves in tuition.
