There are Philly hoagies in LA, thanks to Havertown native Josh Agran.

He’s bringing his love and familiarity with the iconic Philadelphia hoagie to Los Angeles with his pop-up business Delco Rose Hoagies, writes Max Benett for Patch.

Hoagies were always in the background of his youth, from Lee’s Hoagies in Wynnewood and South Philadelphia.

So when he ended up in Los Angeles in early 2020, he noticed something was missing.

“LA has a lot of good burgers and tacos,” he said. But the sandwich scene, according to him, is “famously bad.”

He created as close to an Italian hoagie as he could using deli offerings from the Cookbook Market in the City of Angels and the popular Los Angeles baguette.

“They were gobsmacked with how good they were,” he said, despite its lack of authentic peppers, cheeses, or Amoroso/Liscio roll.

It was actor Elijah Wood, a fan of the Philly hoagie, who suggested Agran expand his sandwich creation into the weekly Delco Rose hoagie pop-up.

He launched in January 2023 when the Eagles were headed to the Super Bowl.

Delco Rose sells out weekly on his 30 Italian and six veggie hoagies.
