Baltimore-native Hilton Carter, once a fledgling filmmaker, was inspired to switch focus and become a plantfluencer on Instagram by a Terrain flagship store and cafe in Glen Mills.

When the fashion retailer Anthropologie launched its garden and home brand, Terrain, in 2008, Hilton Carter was just starting his filmmaker career, writes Steven Kurutz for The New York Times.

But when he visited the brand’s flagship store and cafe in Glen Mills, he recalled being “hit over the head” by the beauty of the tropical plants that were hung like chandeliers.

What he saw had a profound effect on him so he decided to switch his focus from films to plants and plant-centered home design.

He has since become a popular plantfluencer on Instagram and authored several books, including Wild at Home: How to Style and Care for Beautiful Plants and Wild Interiors: Beautiful Plants in Beautiful Spaces.

Since entering the field, he has also noticed that there has been a significant change in the attitudes toward houseplants and their status when it comes to home design.

“There wasn’t a lot of, ‘Let’s treat plants like art,’” he said. “Now you’ll see that.”
