The Delaware County Institute of Science (DCIS) is set to celebrate its 190th anniversary with a grand open house event on October 8th, from 11 AM to 5 PM, writes Peg Degrassa for the Delco Times.

The institution, nestled in Veterans Square in Media, has been a cornerstone of knowledge and scientific exploration since its inception in 1833 by five visionary Quaker men.

Primarily managed by dedicated volunteers, the DCIS has stuck to its mission of disseminating knowledge to the general public through its museum and library.

Visitors to the open house will be treated to a rich array of exhibits that span the realms of natural history and science.

From mounted birds and animals, a herbarium of Delaware County plants, fossils, and corals from various global locations to an intriguing collection of animal skulls, bird nests, eggs, butterflies, and insects, the museum offers a comprehensive view of the natural world.

DCIS also serves as a repository of historical artifacts, including maps as old as 1810, Native American tools and pottery, and late 1800s radios and radio vacuum tubes.

In addition to its exhibits, the DCIS has been a hub for knowledge-sharing through its monthly lecture program, which runs from October through May.
