Wawa deliveries could soon be enhanced with green technology as the convenience store chain test pilots its first electric delivery truck in its fleet, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.
The effort is part of an “electrification of transportation” across its operations.
The truck will deliver to Wawa locations in Greater Philadelphia. The truck has a range of 225 miles and will charge each night in preparation for the next day’s deliveries.
Wawa has partnered with Penske Logistics to pilot test the Freightliner eCascadia battery-electric truck for six months.
The truck’s financial and operational viability will be tested to see if it can added to the existing delivery fleet, said Wawa President Brian Schaller.
“This truck, on average, makes stops at 10 Wawa stores. We now have 1,000 stores. Wawa can make a difference. We need to explore things like this to see how we can do that,” Schaller said.
The goal would be a widespread rollout of the vehicle if successful. The amount of investment to develop, implement, and maintain the vehicles will be studied during the pilot run.
No time was given for when additional electric trucks might be added.
