Upper Darby is about to get a lot more artistic, and better looking.

The community action group “Taking It to the Wall” has launched an Upper Darby murals program with help from the township, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Ten smaller murals painted on electrical boxes should be in place by October. Painting of three larger murals will start in the spring.

Local artists are lined up, and now the search is on for wall owners and locations.  Community feedback is also being sought.

“The mural arts program in Upper Darby has been a long dream of many people,” Kyle McIntyre, one of the co-founders of Understanding, Devotion, Take Action and Justice, said.

U.D.T.J. is overseeing the program, which took its inspiration from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

“Murals … create a positive sense of place and destination, resulting in increased foot traffic, while adding color, vibrancy, and character to the urban environment,” the program website states.

McIntyre described Upper Darby’s mural program as long-term, funded through public-private partnerships.

The pilot program is being launched with a $100,000 American Rescue Plan Act grant.
