A vehicle maintenance operation at a Folsom Marine Reserve facility on Rt. 420 is releasing exhaust fumes that are finding their way to its neighbors, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

The Major Gen. Smedley Butler U.S. Marine Corps Training Center at 610 Kedron Ave. in Ridley became a vehicle maintenance operation in the last year. It’s bringing dozens of idling diesel trucks that run into the night, parked along a fence behind homes.

For one neighboring family, the change has been a nightmare as they worry about their health and prolonged exposure to the fumes.

“We are not anti-military. I totally support the Marines, but they’ve got to be a good neighbor,” said the woman, who asked to be identified. “My family has lived here for 30 years, and the training center has always worked well within the community, but the change of use into a fleet maintenance facility is much more different.”

About 50 trucks are being kept at the site for preventative maintenance.

Efforts are being made by Ridley Township officials and U.S. Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon to have Marine Center representatives meet with residents and seek out solutions.
