Here’s How Wilmington University Gives You Credit for What You Already Know
Wilmington University turns prior learning experiences into academic credit in many different ways that mean spending less time and money to earn a degree. A lot less.
If you’ve taken some college courses, if you’ve completed certifications, or if you have military experience, it all adds up to prior learning that can do extra duty work for you.
In fact, there are 10 ways to earn credit at WilmU for work you have already done.
- College courses and credits.
In most cases, if you’ve already attended some college or have taken advanced classes, you can apply up to 90 academic credits toward a WilmU associate or bachelor’s degree program to achieve your educational goals. Visit the Credit Transfer Tool for a list of previously evaluated courses that transfer into WilmU’s degree programs.
- Standardized tests and exams.
WilmU gives credit for standardized tests and exams you have taken, including Advancement Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST), and UExcel Exams.
- Portfolio assessment.
Submit your resume with any documents, images and correspondence that demonstrate your understanding of the course material and WilmU will evaluate its value toward your degree. A portfolio assessment allows you to challenge a course and obtain credit for knowledge that you feel you already possess.
- Industry-recognized certifications and licenses.
WilmU accepts your existing certifications and licenses as academic credit toward your degree, including: Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI), ITF+ Certification, Real Estate Broker License, and Project Management Professional (PMP) – and there are many more. View a complete list of approved certifications, licenses, and credentials and make your professional learning work for you.
- Military training and experiences.
As a Military Friendly School, WilmU evaluates Joint Services Transcripts and accepts credit for military training and the Community College of the Air Force. If you serve, or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, WilmU puts real value on your training and experience. Learn more about military benefits at WilmU and find out how your education credentials work for your continued service and/or civilian transition.
- Work-based experience.
WilmU honors credit recommendations decided by organizations like the American Council on Education (ACE) and the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) to award students credit for non-traditional college-level learning. This is a great way to earn academic credit for past or present training and education you have received.
- Workplace training.
Workplace training, like work-based experience, is another way your prior learning experience helps you achieve your educational goals. WilmU awards credit for attending a police academy, first responder training, and advanced skills training, to name a few.
- Cooperative Education (Co-Op) and Internships
You can earn credit for a completed co-op program or a paid, unpaid, or stipend-only internship. These hands-on opportunities provide a better understanding of the relationship between theoretical concepts and practical application, and WilmU applies them as academic credit for your degree program.
- Delaware Pathways
Delaware Pathways are career-oriented Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs available at select high schools in Delaware. If you have completed a Pathway program, you can earn up to 18 academic credits and guaranteed admission to most of our 200+ accredited degree programs. Learn how WilmU works for Delaware Pathways.
- Dual-Credit/Dual Admission High School Programs
WilmU Pre-College programs are an opportunity for high-achieving high school students to experience what a college course is like while still attending high school. The Early College Credit program is offered at WilmU locations and online, while the Dual Enrollment program typically occurs directly at the high school campus. Both options are great ways to earn college credit while meeting high school graduation requirements.
