Hannah Rose Nussbaum of Haverford keeps pretty busy with her Facebook pickleball community group as she extolls the virtues of the game for beginners in the Philadelphia area, writes Fallon Roth for Billy Penn.

She’s part of a small group of experts showing up in the local pickleball scene.

People come to her group, “Greater Philly Area Pickleball Beginner Rec Play & Lessons” looking for the best courts, looking for tournaments, trading skill tips, and seeking out playing partners.

“I want them to be able to use this as a resource to find their own community and really enjoy who they’re playing with,” said the 29-year-old.

There was an immediate interest when she created the page in November 2021. She now has over 800 members.

Kimberly Kusumoto, 54, a Havertown mom with a full-time corporate job, collaborated with Nussbaum to create her own Facebook group, “Girls Just Wanna Dink”. A “dink” is a type of pickleball shot.

“We’re advocating for women’s pickleball, we’re supporting community play, we’re bringing people in the community together, to have fun together,” Kusumoto said.

Kusumoto sees the page as an opportunity for “girl talk” over the latest pickleball fashions and cheering on other women in the sport.
