Lansdowne Volunteer Travels to Maui to Help in Fire Disaster

A Lansdowne Red Cross volunteer who had just been on vacation in Lahaina, Maui now finds himself heading back there with a serious job to do.

He joined other volunteers and first responders across Pennsylvania to help Hawaii cope with the wildfire destruction in Maui, writes Maggie Kent for 6abc.

“The whole town is gone. I just can’t believe it; we were there the second week of June,” said Fred Lehman.

“I’m prepared to see the worst. And it’s probably worse than I can imagine,” he said.

Lahaina is a historic waterfront town created in the 1700s. It’s been reduced to ashes from wildfires spreading through the area.

Upon his return to Maui, Lehman will be volunteering with the Red Cross.

“Folks are so grateful, and you know, frankly, I wish that if it happens to me, folks will be there for me like I want to be there,” said Lehman.

More than 93 people have already died in the Maui fires, and the death toll continues to rise.

Along with the Red Cross, PA Task Force One, and volunteers across the nation, the US Navy and Coast Guard have been deployed to assist.
