Collingdale Turns Out to Honor Vet Joe Passaretti on 105th Birthday

There was a large turnout Saturday in Collingdale to celebrate World War II veteran Joe Passaretti's 105th birthday.

It seemed as if everyone in Collingdale turned out Saturday at the Collingdale Community Center to celebrate the 105th birthday of World War II Army veteran Joe Passaretti, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

State and local officials, veterans, friends, and community members all came out to a birthday bash for Passaretti, who officially turned 105 on Sunday.

“This is all overwhelming, and I’m very surprised,” Passaretti said to the crowd. “I enjoyed everything, including the food, and I thank everyone for this wonderful birthday surprise.”

.Joe Passaretti is a 68-year resident of Collingdale.

The veteran received salutes and greetings along a walkway of flags by members of the Stars and Stripes Bags and Pipes Motorcycle Support Group, the 2nd Brigade Motorcycle Club, the Vietnam Veterans of Post 598, and District Judge Lee Grimes, who was a Marine infantryman.

An emotional ceremony led by borough Mayor Donna Matteo-Spadea, honored Passaretti for his service.

Joe Passaretti served in the Army during World War II in Africa and Europe, from 1942 to 1945, earning a Purple Heart and many other medals.

He participated in five invasions in Europe and Africa as an artillery specialist.
