Chadds Ford lumberjill world champion Martha King is again vying for the U.S. STIHL Timbersports National Women’s Championship title in the intermediate division as she prepares to compete July 28 in Milwaukee.

King has already won the National Women’s Championship twice, in 2019 and 2021.

The 34-year-old also took the International Women’s Cup in Vienna in May 2022.

At the July 28 national competition, King will take on Erin LaVole, who won the 2023 International Women’s Cup.

Timbersports are a series of woodsman or wood-chopping competitions. Athletes use aces and saws performing tasks often done by lumberjacks.

King is an arborist who works with her father and brothers in the family business, Chadds Ford Tree Service, which her parents started in 1980.

In a competition promotional video, King’s father said he is grateful for her work with the family business but “feels she can be more than that” with a timbersports career.

King said timbersports and her work in the family business are both rooted in forestry.

“It is all connected so I can constantly be training,” King said.

Lumberjill Martha King describes herself as “sweet but deadly”, and “a very competitive person.”

“I’m definitely hungry. I’m definitely working hard for this championship. I want to bring it home again.”
