Former Lafayette College basketball coach Fran O’Hanlon, who retired in 2022, decided he can’t stay away from the Catholic League so you’ll find him now working as the boys’ basketball coach at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, writes Jim Swan for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

O’Hanlon, 74, a veteran in the Philadelphia basketball community, was officially welcomed aboard Monday when Cardinal O’Hara principal Eileen Murphy announced O’Hanlon’s hire.

“He has a proven track record and his experience both on and off the court will be a great addition to our basketball program,” Murphy said.

O’Hanlon retired after 27 seasons as head coach of Lafayette College.  While there, the men’s basketball team won four Patriot League titles and made it to the NCAA Tournament three times.

His Lafayette career record was 361-433.

O’Hanlon’s Philadelphia basketball experience goes back beyond coaching.  As a player, he starred at St. Thomas More School.

At Villanova University, he led the record for assists in a game (16 against Toledo on Feb. 24, 1970).

O’Hanlon had one season with the Miami Floridians of the ABA  before taking his career overseas.

He coached Monsignor Bonner’s boys basketball for three seasons before serving as Fran Dunphy’s assistant at Penn.
