Diane Casey, with Cardinal O'Hara roots, is the new principal at Saint Mark's High School in Wilmington, Del.

For Delaware County native Diane Casey, coming to Saint Mark’s High School in Wilmington, Del. three years ago was like coming home, writes Mike Lang for thedialog.org.

Casey came to the school in 2019 as assistant principal at the invitation of Principal Thomas Fertal.  Casey became principal this year when Fertal took over as school president.

The two knew each other from Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, where Casey was a teacher and assistant principal and Fertal was president.

She was thrilled that Fertal invited her to apply for an administrative position at Saint Mark’s.

“It was the happiest day of my life,’” Casey said. “I’m not kidding you. I came up that driveway, and it said, ‘This is home,’ and it just melted my heart.”

The students are very giving and service-oriented, she said. “The kids are just all about it.”

Casey was a health and physical education teacher at Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia for 23 years.

She moved to Bonner-Prendergast High School for a year before taking time off to earn a certificate of spiritual direction from Neumann University.

Next stop was O’Hara, teaching theology for five years and serving as assistant principal for two years.
