A destination playground two years in the making did not disappoint as large crowds turned out to Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence Thursday for its public inauguration, writes Gina Kim for WHYY.

The playground has been intentionally designed to welcome visitors of all ages and abilities from inside and outside Delaware County.

The $2 million project uses state-of-the-art equipment and an all-inclusive design.

It has ADA-compliant ramps, a bird’s nest swing, and a carousel flush with the ground.

The project also allowed for stormwater infrastructure at the park and an expanded pedestrian mall between the amphitheater and the rear parking lot.

The new playground joins a second CADES Inclusive Playground in Swarthmore.

The county is spending more than $9 million on its parks and open spaces this year and has invested more than $17 million in the past three-and-a-half years.

“This is really indicative of a sea change of county government in terms of their priorities,” said State Sen. Tim Kearney. “To really put their money where their mouth is in terms of green space has been really refreshing and wonderful, and we’re quite happy in the state Senate to be supporters with the state in terms of getting things built.”
