Kidnapping and murder charges are being filed against David Zandstra in connection with the 48- year-old cold case murder of Gretchen Harrington in Marple, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

Eight-year-old Gretchen Harrington was walking to summer bible camp on the morning of Aug. 15, 1975, when she disappeared. The incident ended a time of innocence for families, parents, and children in her neighborhood.

The bible camp was run by Trinity Church Chapel Christian Reform Church and The Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Gretchen Harrington’s father was a pastor at Reformed. Zandstra was the pastor at Trinity and was responsible for transporting children between the two churches.

Gretchen’s remains were discovered at Ridley Creek State Park on Oct. 14, 1975.

In January 2023, an unnamed childhood friend of Zandstra’s daughter came forward with information that implicated Zandstra’s alleged involvement.

Investigators tracked Zandstra to Marietta, Georgia. He admitted to the crime, according to investigators.

Zandstra has since refused to waive extradition. A petition is being filed with PA Gov. Josh Shapiro to have Zandstra extradited to Pennsylvania.

“It’s difficult to express the emotions that we are feeling as we take one step closer to justice,” read a statement from the Harrington family following Zandstra’s arrest.
